CAP High School Prize Examination
International Baccalaureate Higher "Core" Curriculum

The following topics from the I.B. Higher Core Curriculum are used in setting the CAP High School Prize Examination.

Section 1: Core

  1. Mechanics
    1. Kinematics of a point in reciliniear motion
    2. Concepts of mass and force. Equilibrium
    3. Motion of a particle under a constant force.
    4. Circular motion of a particle.
    5. Kepler's Laws, Newtons law of universal gravitation and gravitational potential.
    6. The conservation of energy and momentum,
    7. Oscillatory motion under a Hooke's law force.
  2. Wave Behavior
    1. Travelling waves in mechanical media.
    2. Stationary waves on strings and in pipes.
    3. Beats, Doppler Effect. Shock waves.
    4. Reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization.
  3. Electricity and Magnetism
    1. The concepts of charge and coulombs law.
    2. The concepts of electric field and the force on a charge in an electric field.
    3. The storage of charge and energy in a capacitor.
    4. The concepts of electric potential, current and resistance. Ohm's law, direct current circuits.
    5. Magnetic field of a long straight wire, flat coil, solenoids. forces on moving charges and straight, current carrying wires in a constant magnetic field.
    6. Electromagnetic Induction.
Section 2: Optional Topics
  1. Geometicical Optics
    1. Image formation using plane and spherical mirrors
    2. Image formation using thin spherical lenses. Focal length: experimental measurement and the lensmakers formula.
    3. Deviation and dispersion by prisms. Total internal reflection.
