Funding programs to host visitors from the Latin America/Caribbean region for 4-6 months

The Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) is seeking applications from Canadian institutions for the
Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program, Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Program, and Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership Program to host undergraduate and graduate students from Latin America and the Caribbean as well as faculty and international liaison officers from the CARICOM who wish to come to Canada for a short-term study or research exchange.
 
Please Note:  Submission of scholarship applications to the Canadian Government is April 30th, 2014. To allow us enough time to process applications and institutional agreements, we require the student’s home institutions to nominate their students by
April 4th, 2014. All nominations can be sent to study.abroad@usask.ca. Please indicate the program name (ELAP, CARICOM, etc.) in the subject line, and your e-mail should include your area of academic interest, whether you are an undergraduate student, graduate student, or faculty member, and the name and location of the university. Please also indicate if you have been in contact with a particular department or faculty/staff member at the UofS.
 
The International Student and Study Abroad Centre (ISSAC) coordinates undergraduate student applications, and the International Research Office coordinates graduate student and faculty applications.
 
Eligibility
Candidates must be citizens of one of the following eligible countries:
  • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos;
  • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama;
  • North America: Mexico; or
  • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.

Candidates:
  • who have obtained Canadian citizenship or who have applied for permanent residency in Canada are not eligible;
  • already participating in an exchange program in Canada are not eligible;
  • already enrolled in a degree or diploma program at a Canadian university or college are not eligible; and
  • must be enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country and paying any tuition fees regulated by that institution for the full duration of the exchange.
 
The candidate’s studies or research may commence as early as July 2, 2014 but no later than February 2, 2015.
 
Scholarship Value and Duration
  • $7,200 CAN for undergraduate or graduate students for four months or one academic term of study or research;
  • $9,700 CAN for graduate students for a period of five or six months of study or research;
  • $2,700 CAN for faculty members for two to three weeks of course work or research as part of their professional development;
  • $2,700 CAN for international directors, managers or administrators for two to three weeks of course work, or for a practicum in the area of internationalization of postsecondary institutions or student mobility as part of their professional development; or
  • $9,700 CAN for faculty members for five to six months of study or research at the graduate level.
