Part-Time Student Assistants
Application Information
Application forms for the position of Part-Time Student Assistant are available on line or can be picked up at the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics Main Office. This form may be used for applications for Regular term appointments or for Summer School and Intersession appointments.
In the regular term, demonstration appointments usually involve being present in the laboratory one morning or afternoon a week, along with grading the laboratory note books. Marking appointments involve grading homework assignments for an undergraduate class. A few undergraduate class tutoring or "help desk" assistant positions may also be available. Observatory assistants also come under the heading of part-time student assistants.
Student assistant assignments vary from 1 hour per week up to 10
hours
per week. In a few cases more than one assignment may be given to
one student. Laboratory demonstrating appointments are normally
for
a 10 week term while marking and tutoring appointments are normally 11
week terms. The following table gives the hourly pay rates for
2008
/ 2009.

For undergraduate students the lowest rate is for students who have completed up to two years training in physics and have little or no experience. Each increment above that will recognize each additional year of experience and/or education in physics. It should be noted that, according to the College of Graduate Studies, a full-time graduate student may not undertake more than 12 hours per week of Student Asssistant employment. A Physics or Engineering Physics Graduate student must get his/her research supervisor to approve the application. A graduate student in other departments must have the application approved by his/her department head. Students who are not Canadians or Landed Immigrants need not have an employment visa provided they are enrolled full-time at the University.
An application for employment must be submitted by the deadline
and must include:
1. The completed Pages 1 and 2 and of the application form.
2. A completed timetable (Page 3)
3. A completed TD1 Tax Exemption form (if one is not already
on file).
