Sc., Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, 1983 Ph.D. (Candidate of Phys. & Math. Sci.), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, 1986 Research and Academic Interests Dr. Smolyakov is a plasma theoretician with research interests in developing and applying plasma theory to present plasma confinement experiments, low temperature plasma sources for material processing, and space phenomena. His current plasma research includes studying the behavior of MHD tearing-type modes and magnetic islands in a tokamaks; magnetohydrodynamic models for turbulence and plasma transport; theory of zonal flows in a tokamak; nonlinear effects in inductive plasmas; and MHD waves and instabilties in astrophysical plasmas.
